International Education

The Napa Valley College Singers have performed in Europe and Asia.  The Singers are looking forward to a tour to northern Italy in the future.

JAPAN (Winter 2008)
In December 2008, the Singers travelled to sing the Beethoven Ninth with the Iwanuma choir and the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, in Napa’s Japanese sister city.  The Ninth Symphony is traditionally sung during the holiday season in Japan and the text by Schiller represents the sense of community we all felt as choir members hosted us in their homes and treated us as honored guests representing the sister city exchange between Iwanuma and Napa.

The NVC Singers are looking forward to hosting the Iwanuma singers as they join us and Napa community singers in the “Ode to Joy” performance, May 1, 2011 in the new Performing Arts Center Theater.

The NVC singers joined a 200 member chorus  for a 10-day cruise/tour with stops in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan (Alaska); cruised through Tracy Arm (Sawyer Glaciers) and Glacier Bay National Park.  On-shipboard days were filled exciting rehearsals and workshops with master instructors.  The tour culminated with an evening concert performance at Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada).

This performance tour started in Oban, Scotland with the NVC Singers performing through Scotland for a week in marvelous acoustic stone venues:  Iona Abbey, St. Fillan’s Parish Church in Aberdour, Church of the Holy Rude surrounding Stirling Castle, and in Edinburgh at St. George West Church, St. Gillis Cathedral and busking on the Royal Mile.  Then after an overnight train to London they visited the new Globe Theatre, sang at the Elizabethan Banquet at Hatfield House, and saw a production of My Fair Lady before returning to Napa.

BARCELONA, SPAIN (Summer 2001)
In the gorgeous surrounding of Barcelona, the singers rehearsed with other choruses in preparation of performances of  the Verdi Requiem with the European Symphony Orchestrain the Teatre Fortuny in Reus, and in the Palais de la musica, a venue specifically built for the chamber singers of Barcelona, Spain.  The NVC Singers are surrounded with marvelous instrumentalists, soloists and a city filled with Gaudian and modernist architecture; a complete artistic and cultural experience.

CZECH REPUBLIC (Summer 1999)
The concert tour of Eastern Europe centered around Prague, Czech Republic, with rehearsals of the Mozart Requiem and performances at the Kladubry Monstery, concert hall in Frantiskovy Lazne and in the famous Prague concert hall, the Rudolfinum.

The NVC Singers were invited to join other choruses to sing individually and in a combined chorus for the first National Madrigal Festival performance at Carnegie Hall.  The singers were in full Renaissance costume and also performed at an evening Renaissance Dinner in New York on the same day.

GERMANY/AUSTRIA (Summer 1995).
This was the first international vocal performance tour for the singers from Napa Valley College. This 16-day educational quest began in southern Germany, with a vocal workshop and backstage tour of Munich’s Gärtnerplatz operetta house. The performances continued in Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany), Trebon (Czech Republic), Salzburg, and Vienna (Austria.) in a wide variety of venues from an outdoor theater to an thrilling monastery. Of course, the singers also took the opportunity to test the acoustics in the stunning Neuschwanstein and Herrenchiemsee castles, and Ettal Monastery.
